BEACHS, LAGOONS AND LAKES
ITAÚNA´S BEACH: This surfers’ paradise is the most famous area of Saquarema. It is the perfect spot for a good surfers’ party, chilling on the beach or having a drink at the kiosk (little bars on the beach).
Praia de Itaúna also boast some peace and quiet away from the surfer’s activity on its pristine sand. Width: +/- 1, 5 km.
PRAINHA: Located between Itaúna´s and Vila´s beaches, on the side of the church t´s a tiny little peace of heaven.
VILATUR´S BEACH: This pristine beach stretches between Massambaba’s Ambiental nature area and the Lagoa Vermelha (Red lagoon)
MASSAMBABA´S BEACH: Situated in the middle of a nature protection area this beach of breathtaking, untouched beauty will rejoice any nature lover.
JACONÉ´S BEACH: Great spot for sportive fishing.
MINERAL WATER´S LAKE: This picturesque lake is huddled on top of the Mato Grosso Mountain. It is renowned for the mineral proprieties of its fresh water.
JACONÉ´S LAGOON: With its outstanding location between the ocean and the mountain, Jacone Lagoon will seduce you with its unique beauty.
JACARÉPIA´S LAGOON: In the all of the Regiao dos Lagos (the lakes aera) Jacarepia´s Lagoon is the only lake with fresh water. It is a sanctuary that shelters many endangered species of flora and fauna.
RED LAGOON: This preserved area is composed of 3 lakes surrounded by a canal. Its many marshes make this place ideal to enjoy medicinal bathes as their high concentration in hydrogen sulphate makes for a great skin treatment as well as a cure against rheumatisms.
Massambaba’s Environmental Protection Area.
A dense sandy area stretching between Atlantic forest and the sea composes this magnificient nature reserve. Its rich ecosystem thrives in an almost untouched environment which will definately speak to the nature lovers. Loads of nature relating activities is offered, mild level of difficulty for treaking around the forest, the sand dunes and the beach.
RONCADOR MOUNTAIN’S WATERFALL
Join a guid around this hiking trail amidst a beautifull, wild area of breathtaking sceneries. Six waterfalls are waiting to uncover their charms (moderate difficulty).
MATO GROSSO´S MOUNTAIN
This luxuriant Atantlic forest area offers many exiting walking trails, along which you will refresh over natural water foutains. Awesome panoramic views over the sea and the lagoons.
Nestled among the forest Tingui will ensure a soft and peacefull communion with nature. Its running water pools make it an ideal place for families.
20 minutes walk across the APA nature reserve.
RED LAGOON HIKING TRAIL
A walk around the wild area of the red lagoon with the visit of the salt marsh by the Araruama Lagoon takes about 2h00.
MINERAL WATER LAKE´S HIKING TRAIL
Hight level of difficulty for treaking. About 8km.
With steep up hills, ideal for people in search of adventure. Your hard effort will be made worth it when you reach this amazing location and the uncovery of a clear water lake on top of the moutain.
TINGUI WATERFALL HIKING TRAIL.
Extension from the Mineral water lake’s hiking trail.
Uphills all the way with mild to hard stretches. The walk takes about 2 hours. It offers one of the most beautifull views of the municipal district.
FREE FLYING RAMP
Considered one of the best in Brasil with excelent take off conditions as well as safe landings. The view? Great!.
SAMBAQUI DA BEIRADA’S MUSEUM
The adepts of archaeology will be attracted to Saquarema to enjoy a visit of the Sambaquis. They are archaelogical farms or cemeteries with remains of ancien tribes. The museum has been declared National History Heritage and the site remains in excelent condition.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Friday from 1pm to 4 pm.
Saturday and Sunday: from 9am to 4 pm.
Built in 1800 the former city hall now hosts exhibitions from local artists.
Opening hours. From Monday to Friday 9am to 5 pm.
Volleyball center of development in Brazil.
This is the biggest volleyball training center in the world! It goes without saying that this is where all Brazilian selections of volleyball train.
The center hosts a volleyball museum.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday: from 8 am to 5 pm.
Saturdays and Sundays: from 8 am to 3 pm.
This traditionnal market has been presenting local artists for many years to this town. Great place to purchase souvenirs.
Opening times: December to Febuary daily from 6pm. The rest of the year it opens from Friday to Sunday from 6 pm.
SANTA CRUZ OBSERVATORY
This is the perfect place from where to take panoramic pictures of the city and the lagoon.
Opening times: Monday to Friday from 9am to 11am and from 12:30pm to 5pm.
MARIO LAGOS THEATHER
This 160 seater’s theatre hosts plays and dance shows. SALARTE is the theatre’s annex which hosts exhibitions.
Opening times of Salarte: daily from 9am to 12:00.
HOUSE OF ROCK
This is an initiative from the 70s celebrity singer Serguei. The house presents a collection of photographs, objects and videos depicting his life as well as the ones of fellow singers of his time, Janis Joplin, John Lennon and Jim Morrisson. To this day Serguei lives in this house and he is your host through this amazing journey around his and his friends’ history.
Opening times: daily from 4pm.
The Lady of Nazareth’s church.
On September the 8th 1630 a picture of the Lady of Nazareth was found. Few years later a chapel was built in her honnor. Saquarema finds its origin in this chapel as it was built around this point. In 1675 the chapel was renovated and extended with the création of a temple which is now ruined.
The church that is now standing was built between 1820 and 1837.
Every year crowds gather to celebrate Saquarema’s patron saint, the Lady of Nazareth’s with fireworks and great festivity.
Opening times Daily from 9am to 11 am and from 2pm to 5pm.
LADY OF LOURDE´S GROTTO
The grotto is situated right next to the lady of Nazareth’s church. The grotto was chosen for its strong ressemblance to the one in Lourdes, France where the Virgin Mary appeared to a young girl.
